According to the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM), postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of preventable, pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality. The AIM Obstetric Hemorrhage Patient Safety Bundle provides guidance to support hospitals in coordinating and standardizing care for patients experiencing hemorrhage during pregnancy and the postpartum period. 

The DC PQC began implementation of the AIM Obstetric Hemorrhage bundle in 2024. Since then, we have partnered with birthing hospitals to strengthen clinical practices, improve response to hemorrhage events, and promote safe, high-quality care for all patients. 

The DC PQC is now expanding efforts to address additional priority areas within the hemorrhage bundle, while continuing to build on these foundational improvements and support hospitals in sustaining best practices.

Key Accomplishments & Learning Initiatives

  • Quantified Blood Loss (QBL) Sprint

    Collaborated with hospital teams to strengthen QBL measurement practices through workflow review, barrier identification, and shared tools to support accurate and consistent tracking. 

  • Hemorrhage Respectful Care Initiative

    Focused on improving patient-centered debriefs following hemorrhage events, with an emphasis on communication, trauma-informed care, and emotional support.
