New Data from CDC Reveals Maternal Deaths Spiked in 2021

The Centers for Disease Control found that maternal deaths in the U.S. increased by 40% from 2020 to 2021. This rate is more than ten times higher than the estimated rates of some other high income countries including Australia and Japan. Researchers connect the increase in maternal deaths to the COVID-19 pandemic, and underscore the disproportionate maternal death rate among Black Americans.
