The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists updated its guidelines on syphilis screening during pregnancy in response to a significant rise in congenital syphilis cases. The recommendations advise that all pregnant women should be tested for syphilis three times: at the first prenatal visit, during the third trimester, and at delivery. This marks a change from the previous guidance, which suggested third-trimester testing only for those at high risk.
The increased screening is crucial due to the alarming growth in congenital syphilis cases, which have risen by 755% from 2012 to 2021. Syphilis during pregnancy can lead to severe complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and significant health problems for the newborn.
